What is kundli matching or Guna Milan?+
It is the comparison of two birth horoscopes for marriage compatibility, followed by many families across India. The most widely used method, Ashtakoota Milan, scores the match out of 36 points across eight factors called kootas.
How many gunas are needed for marriage?+
Traditionally 18 or more of the 36 gunas is considered acceptable, 25 or more very good and 32 or more excellent. Families also look at Nadi and Bhakoot dosha and at Manglik status, and many take a final view with their astrologer.
Why does the time and place of birth matter?+
The Moon moves about one degree every two hours, so the birth time decides the nakshatra and sometimes the rashi. The place sets the local time zone and the lagna (ascendant), which is used for the Manglik check. Use the time from the birth certificate where you can.
How accurate is this kundli matching?+
Planet positions are calculated astronomically for the exact moment and place of birth, in the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa — the same standard used by Indian panchangs. Historical time zones, such as India's wartime time before 1945, are taken into account.
What is Manglik dosha?+
A chart is considered Manglik when Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the lagna. When both partners are Manglik the dosha is traditionally considered balanced. Mars in its own sign or exalted is a widely accepted exception.
Can I do kundli matching by name only?+
Matching by name alone uses the first letter of the name to guess a nakshatra, which is only a rough approximation. For a real Guna Milan you need the date, time and place of birth, which is what this tool uses.
What if there is Nadi dosha or Bhakoot dosha?+
Nadi dosha (same nadi for both) and Bhakoot dosha (Moon signs 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 apart) are given the most weight. Traditional exceptions can cancel them — for example the same rashi with different nakshatras for Nadi, or friendly rashi lords for Bhakoot — and the result shows when a cancellation applies.
Is 36 out of 36 gunas possible?+
Yes, but it is rare. Most matches score between 15 and 30. A score above 18 is generally considered workable; families also weigh doshas and Manglik status, not the number alone.
